Dying fish in the middle of the road

Post  ChasingSanity on Tue Jun 15, 2010 6:47 am

This happened Saturday, June 12th, 2010
I was riding my bicycle across a bridge between Hawarden and Alcester, South Dakota. There was a fish in the middle of the road. It flopped. It was long and skinny like a pickerel or northern pike. I rode for a little ways feeling I should do something, but what? I did not want to get fish smell on anything of mine - it lasts for a long time and something will grow on whatever the smell is on and keep growing.

Grass and road trash were my answer. I stopped, set my bike down and walked back. I thought about looking silly to the locals - rescuing a dying fish on the road. I walked back to the fish. It's guts and roe were coming out both ends. I felt vulneIrable walking away from my bike. I flattened a beer can, picked it up and a piece of waxed paper too. With the trash I picked up it's head and threw it far into the flooded grass.

Soon it would be yesterday's food for something.

What would you have done?
